Horticulture Series

Touch Of Green Exotics

Horticulturist Lisa from Touch Of Green Exotics is hosting classes for amateur horticulturalist and green thumbs alike at WNY Reptiles.


Wednesday's

5:30pm-7:30pm


Classes provide a plant for you to grow at home.


Lisa Davidson

Founder of Touch of Green Exotics and holding a degree in Horticulture Production, she has spent over 20 years working in the tropical greenhouse at Menne Nursery. As an avid aroid collector with a strong interest in how plants function within larger ecosystems Lisa is looking forward to spreading her knowledge within the reptile community and beyond.

With years of hands on experience from houseplants, terrariums, reptiles to amphibians, her work now focuses on plants that don’t just survive, but  thrive in these environments. She combines professional horticultural expertise with real-world application and ongoing experimentation.


Touch Of Green Exotics

Aroids (Philodendron & Anthurium)

Dive into the fascinating family of Aroids, focusing on two of the most popular genera: Philodendron and Anthurium. This class will cover their unique features, care requirements, and ideal growing conditions. Participants will learn about propagation techniques specific to Aroids, including water propagation and division. The course will also discuss the aesthetic appeal of these plants, showcasing various varieties and their uses in home décor. By the end, students will feel confident in their ability to nurture and display these stunning plants.

Tropicals in the Landscape

Discover how to incorporate tropical plants into your landscape design in this immersive class. Participants will explore various tropical species, their growth habits, and how to create a lush, vibrant outdoor space. The course will cover design principles, seasonal considerations, and how to select plants that thrive in your local climate. Students will also learn about maintenance practices, including pruning and fertilization, to ensure a flourishing tropical garden that can withstand different weather conditions.

Terrarium & Other Containers (Kokedama)

This hands-on class focuses on creating stunning terrariums and other unique container gardens, including Kokedama (Japanese moss balls). Participants will learn about the materials needed, suitable plants, and the art of layering for aesthetic appeal. The course will cover the care of these miniature ecosystems, including humidity control, light requirements, and watering techniques. By the end of the session, students will have crafted their own terrarium or Kokedama to take home, along with the knowledge to create more in the future.

Full Bioactive Demo

Experience the dynamic world of bioactive ecosystems in this comprehensive demonstration class. Participants will gain insights into the principles of bioactive setups, including the importance of beneficial microorganisms, plant selection, and habitat creation. The class will feature a live demonstration of setting up a bioactive terrarium or vivarium, showcasing the integration of plants, soil, and fauna. Attendees will learn about maintenance practices that support a thriving bioactive environment, including feeding schedules and environmental monitoring. This class is ideal for anyone looking to create a self-sustaining ecosystem at home.
